SPD Lawmakers Urge Stronger Criticism of Israel

(MENAFN) Several members of Germany’s co-governing Social Democratic Party (SPD) pressed their organization on Thursday to adopt a firmer position toward Israel, citing its harsh actions in Gaza, the West Bank, and Lebanon.

Adis Ahmetovic, the SPD parliamentary group’s foreign policy spokesperson in the Bundestag, told a newspaper that Israel bears responsibility for tens of thousands of deaths in Gaza, “a ruthless settlement policy in the West Bank, and massive suffering among the civilian population in Lebanon.” He emphasized that “as the SPD, we must clearly call out these ongoing violations of international law if we do not want to be accused of applying double standards.”

At the same time, SPD legislator Isabel Cademartori demanded a more explicit stance on the Middle East conflict. Addressing party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Baerbel Bas, she stated: “I have long wanted the party leadership to clearly state that Israel’s actions in the Gaza Strip violate international law and to act accordingly.”

Cademartori further argued that if the European Union is negotiating punitive measures against the Israeli government, Germany should stop obstructing them, as she explained to the newspaper.
