Iraq’s Main Shiite Bloc Delays PM Nomination Decision
The bloc stated that the meeting originally scheduled to finalize the nomination was delayed in order to allow more time for discussions and to reach an agreement within the constitutional deadline, as cited by Iraq’s official news agency INA.
Earlier this week, the group’s Secretary-General Abbas al-Amiri had indicated that internal consultations were progressing positively, but the decision had already been pushed from an earlier date to midweek before being postponed again.
The Coordination Framework, which brings together several Shiite political factions, has met multiple times but has yet to agree on a unified candidate for the premiership.
Under Iraq’s constitution, once a new president is elected, the nominee of the largest parliamentary bloc must be tasked with forming a government within 15 days.
The Coordination Framework currently holds a dominant position in parliament, controlling roughly 130 to 140 seats out of 329, based on recent electoral results, giving it a decisive role in government formation.
The alliance had previously put forward former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki as its candidate, although his nomination reportedly faced external political opposition, including objections from US President Donald Trump, according to reports at the time.
