Israeli Troops Arrest Two Syrians in Quneitra Incursion

(MENAFN) Israeli forces detained two Syrian men during an early-morning incursion into southwestern Syria on Monday, according to a broadcaster.

The state broadcaster reported that Israeli troops entered the village of Bariqa in the Quneitra countryside, where the two men were arrested during the operation.

Syrian officials have yet to issue any immediate response regarding the incident.

The development marks the latest reported breach of Syrian sovereignty, despite recent statements from Syrian President Ahmad al-Sharaa signaling openness to diplomacy. In remarks last week, al-Sharaa indicated that Damascus is pursuing a potential arrangement with Israel aimed at maintaining regional stability.

Speaking Thursday in an interview, al-Sharaa said Syria is seeking some kind of “security agreement” with Israel that would preserve stability in the region.

He added that the talks had not reached a dead end, but were moving with “extreme difficulty” because of Israel’s insistence on remaining on Syrian territory.

Tensions have remained high since December 2024, when the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government prompted Israel to declare the 1974 Disengagement Agreement void and move into the buffer zone along the border.

Since Assad’s ouster, Israeli forces have continued conducting airstrikes across Syria, targeting military infrastructure, equipment, and ammunition, with reported civilian casualties, despite the new Syrian leadership refraining from issuing direct threats toward Israel.
