Shooting Leaves Four Dead in Southern Syria

(MENAFN) A deadly shooting in southern Syria claimed four lives Saturday, prompting authorities to detain a suspect from within their own security ranks while urging citizens to avoid retaliatory violence.

The attack unfolded in the al-Matouneh region of Suwayda province, leaving one person critically wounded alongside the four fatalities. Hussam al-Tahhan, who commands internal security operations in Suwayda, issued a statement via Syria's Interior Ministry on Telegram detailing the incident.

"In a tragic incident in al-Matouneh area of Suwayda countryside, a heinous crime was committed against five residents of the area, resulting in the killing of four of them and the serious injury of the fifth," al-Tahhan stated.

Initial probe findings yielded a disturbing revelation: the alleged perpetrator holds a position within the security apparatus itself. Al-Tahhan disclosed that "based on preliminary investigations and in cooperation with one of the survivors of the shooting, it was found that one of the suspects is a member of the Internal Security Directorate in the area."

Authorities moved swiftly to apprehend the suspect. "The individual was immediately arrested and referred for investigation to complete the legal procedures," al-Tahhan confirmed.

The security commander issued a zero-tolerance warning, declaring that "any violation against citizens is categorically unacceptable, and there will be no tolerance for any act that threatens the security and safety of residents."

Al-Tahhan appealed to "the people of the province to remain calm and show patience and trust in the measures being taken," pledging that "justice will take its course to ensure that such a tragic incident does not recur and that those responsible are held accountable, regardless of their affiliation."

The violence erupts against a fragile backdrop in Suwayda, where a July ceasefire ended devastating clashes between Druze factions and Bedouin tribes that produced hundreds of casualties. Despite the truce, groups affiliated with al-Hijri have conducted repeated violations, targeting military installations. The government has adhered to ceasefire terms, enabling civilian departures and humanitarian deliveries.
