Lieberman Calls for Safe Shelters for Israelis in Event of War with Iran
“We must prepare now and set up safe places for millions of people who do not have a safe shelter," Lieberman, leader of the right-wing Yisrael Beiteinu Party, told local radio.
He emphasized, however, that the ultimate decision to engage in military action against Iran rests with US President Donald Trump. “We are at a stage where the State of Israel must calm down and wait," Lieberman said, noting that Israel has "little ability to influence President Trump, as he is the one who makes the fateful decisions.”
Israel is closely observing the US military buildup in the region while awaiting the outcome of planned US-Iran negotiations scheduled to begin on Friday. The country has expressed concerns over a potential Iranian missile attack should the US strike Iran.
Tensions have risen in recent weeks following anti-government protests in Iran that began in late December. Iranian authorities have accused the US and Israel of supporting what they describe as “rioters” and “terrorists” involved in violent acts during the demonstrations, and Tehran has vowed retaliation against any attack.
The US and Israel maintain that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, while Tehran insists its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes, including electricity generation.
